COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Golden West Women Lose First of Season
Golden West College, the top-ranked women’s basketball team in the nation, lost Saturday to Yakima Valley, 83-78, in the final of the Fullerton College tournament.
Golden West (19-1) had a six-point lead with six minutes remaining when Yakima Valley (17-1) made its decisive run. Golden West was led by Beth Sircha, who had 21 points--including five three-pointers--and Claudette Jackson, who had 19 points. Yakima Valley was led by Barbi Shuel, the tournament’s most valuable player who had 21 points. Donna Gondringer had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Golden West.
In the College of the Desert tournament in Palm Desert:
Golden West 85, Antelope Valley 80--Alex Kreps’ 29 points paced Golden West in the championship game. Rick Van Scoyce, tournament most valuable player, added 17 and Kevin Andersen 15 for Golden West (13-6).
In the Santa Rosa men’s tournament:
Cypress 92, Redwoods 60--Sophomore forward Vince Hizon had 27 points to lead Cypress in the third-place game.
