A 1989 RETROSPECTIVE : PICKET LINE BLUES
Los Angeles teachers hit the pavement for two weeks, leaving their students in the hands of hapless substitutes. In dozens of classrooms, children were fed a steady diet of films and cartoons to keep them occupied. Many youngsters simply stopped showing up. Beverly Hills teachers also went on strike for 13 days. But a picket line never proved more tasty. Twenty-five local restaurants, including several of the city’s trendiest eateries, donated lunches to the teachers. The bill of fare-- penne paradiso, fusilli con luganega, California pizzas and Cobb salads.
