AIR FARES: Those bargain fares announced yesterday by United Airlines (D1), cutting costs as much as 30% on “competitive” routes, won’t help people flying from John Wayne Airport. . . . Under the restricted discounts, United’s lowest prices on LAX-Chicago round-trip flights will drop to $193. . . By contrast, United’s cheapest fare for the two nonstops from less-competitive John Wayne to Chicago, now $318, will jump to $338 after Jan. 5. . . .The good news: Midway, the discount airline which now charges $198 for the LAX-Chicago run, will inaugurate two Chicago flights when John Wayne’s new terminal opens.
