BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Mira Mesa Outguns Chula Vista

Mira Mesa took a 59-43 lead at halftime and had to hang on for a 103-92 victory over Chula Vista at the Hilltop Tournament Saturday.

The combined point total of 195 points is the seventh-highest in section history. The record between two section teams is 213, set when Sweetwater defeated Marian, 122-91 in 1984.

Chula Vista rallied from the halftime deficit to cut the lead to 72-71 late in the third quarter behind Carnell Penn, who scored 16 of his 26 points in the period. Chula Vista outscored Mira Mesa, 31-17, but Mira Mesa pulled away in the final period.

Marc Ziegler scored 24 points and J.J. Rowlett and Kal Chadham added 20 points apiece for Mira Mesa (2-3).

In other Hilltop Tournament games:

Sweetwater 62, Kearny 46--Joe McDowell scored 23 points and Carlos Campbell added 18 to lead Sweetwater (5-0). Darnay Scott scored 17 points to lead Kearny (4-1).

Warhawk-Norsemen Tournament

Lincoln 114, Granite Hills 68--Darryl McMillan scored 29 points, had 26 rebounds, 11 steals and five blocked shots to lead Lincoln. Ken Garner scored a game-high 30 points and Archie Robinson, a 5-foot-1 freshman guard, had 18 points as five players scored in double figures for Lincoln (4-1). Scott Goergens had 26 points to lead Granite Hills (2-3).

Grebo Memorial Tournament

El Camino 73, Temecula 46--Travis Gilley scored a game-high 21 points including three three-pointer to lead top-ranked El Camino (2-1). Russell White added 12 points and had 15 rebounds.

Wolfpack Tournament

Clairemont 80, West Hills 40--Clairemont led 35-10 at halftime in the easy victory at Santana. Alex Love led Clairemont with 17 points.

Bonita Vista 82, Montgomery 42--Mike Barnett scored 18 points led lead Bonita Vista, which held Montgomery to 12 points over the last two quarters.

Ramona Riverside Tournament

Morena Valley 76, San Pasqual 53--Eric Dahl scored a game-high 33 to lead Morena Valley in the championship game. Erik Meek scored 28 points for San Pasqual (6-1).

Grossmont Tournament

Ramona 61, San Marcos 54--Alfonso De La Nuez scored 17 points to lead Ramona (2-1). For Ramona Travis Knight had 10 points and eight blocks.

Laguna Beach Tournament

Fallbrook 61, Corona del Mar 55 OT--Marco Souther scored five of his six points in overtime as Fallbrook won the fifth-place game. Chris Miller led Fallbrook (3-1) with 25 points and Travis Teagle added 12.

Small Schools Tournament

Avalon 52, Army-Navy 43--Chris Crayton scored 20 points for Army-Navy (3-4), but it wasn’t enough as Avalon had three players score in double figures.

Girls

Point Loma Tournament

Top-ranked Point Loma outscored No. 3 Santana, 21-2, in the first quarter and rolled to an easy victory in the championship game. Tyeast Brown led Point Loma (4-0) with 21 points and Ericka Crittenden added 19.
