JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Hank Gathers scored 38 points and Bo Kimble added 35 as Loyola Marymount overpowered Stetson, 125-95, Friday in the first round of the Mazda Gator Bowl basketball tournament.
Loyola (2-1) will play Jacksonville, which defeated Campbell, 87-67, for the tournament championship at 5 p.m. (PST).
Gathers, a 6-7 senior, broke the tournament record of 36 points set by Auburn’s Chuck Person in 1983 against Villanova. Gathers also led all rebounders with 16.
The Lions broke the previous tournament high of 107 points set by Wake Forest in 1975.
Kimble made eight three-point shots as the Lions built a 34-point lead.
“We got some good offense early from Bo Kimble when we needed him,” said Loyola Coach Paul Westhead. “Hank was very effective offensively, slicing through the lane. He was playing up.”
