NHL ROUNDUP : Bullard’s Late Goal Lifts Flyers Over Capitals, 3-2

Mike Bullard scored a goal with 33 seconds to play after Ken Wregget stopped 26 of 28 shots to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals at Landover, Md.

The victory improved the Flyers’ record to 11-3-2 in their last 16 games.

Wregget made several saves, including a glove save on a slapshot through several players by Scott Stevens midway throughout the first period, and a block save on a backhand slot shot through traffic by Geoff Courtnall late in the second.

Washington, which scored once in seven power play chances, fell to 2-5-1 over its last eight home games.

The first period ended in a 1-1 tie despite Washington’s dictating most of the play. Rick Tocchet scored for the Flyers at the 7:38 mark, and Neil Sheehy scored for Washington at 17:45.

Washington took a 2-1 lead at 2:29 of the second on a power-play goal by Dino Ciccarelli.

Buffalo 6, New Jersey 4--Rookie Dave Snuggerud broke a 4-4 tie at 15:23 of the third period and Pierre Turgeon had his first NHL hat trick as the Sabres won their 10th consecutive home game at Buffalo, N.Y.

The Devils’ Sylvain Turgeon, Pierre’s older brother, scored his second goal of the game, at 9:09 of the third period, to tie it, 4-4.

But Scott Arniel picked up a bad bounce off the side boards and took a shot. Devils’ goalie Sean Burke made the save, but the puck fell behind the goaltender and Snuggerud knocked it in for his third goal of the season.

Buffalo, the NHL’s only unbeaten team on home ice, is 11-0-1 at the Memorial Auditorium.

New York Rangers 4, Vancouver 3--John Ogrodnick scored two power play goals late in the third period, including the game-winner with 37 seconds left, to lift the Rangers at Vancouver, Canada.

Detroit 3, Winnipeg 3--Paul Fenton’s goal late in the second period gave the Jets the tie at Winnipeg, Canada.

Detroit took its first lead of the game at 9:22 of the second period when Bernie Federko swung around from behind the Jets’ net and slid the puck under goalie Bob Essensa.
