Mozambique Releases 6 Americans
Six Carlsbad-based medical missionaries and their two guides were released without charge Monday by Mozambique.
Christian Emergency Relief Team officials maintained Monday that the volunteers were abducted last Tuesday while delivering medical aid in Malawi. But Mozambique told U.S. Embassy officials that the group had been “detained,†not forcibly captured, for illegally entering the country, a U.S. State Department spokeswoman in Washington said.
Those released were Ken Daughtery, a Chula Vista minister; Dr. Fred Leist, 48, and his wife, Lucille, 43, from Seattle; John Cannon, 69, a dentist from Davenport, Iowa, and paramedics Steven Sherrill, 48, from Stroudsburg, Pa., and Carol Roberts, 26, from Syracuse, N.Y.
