A 29-year-old Santa Ana man died Sunday after he was stabbed during an argument near 1st Street and the Santa Ana River, police said.
Sgt. Jim McDaniel said Nicholas Zaragoza and another man had been walking home about 10:15 p.m. Saturday when they passed two men near the 1st Street bridge.
“We’re not sure who started the exchange of words,” McDaniel said, “but something was said in Spanish, a fight ensued,” and Zaragoza was stabbed in the chest.
McDaniel said the two men who approached Zaragoza and his friend fled and are being sought.
Zaragoza’s companion, who was not identified, flagged down a motorist in the 3300 block of 1st Street, who called police, McDaniel said.
