Golden League to Decide Fate of Suspended Game

Southern Section officials instructed the Golden League on Monday to determine the status of a high school football game between Palmdale and Saugus that was suspended Friday after a Palmdale player attacked an official.
Palmdale and Saugus school administrators met with Southern Section administrators Bill Clark and Dean Crowley Monday to review videotape of an incident in which Palmdale’s Darius Wilson threw official Brad Woolley to the ground in the fourth quarter of a scoreless game.
Wilson, 18, was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor battery charges and may face criminal charges, according to Elliott Fisher of the Newhall district attorney’s office. Wilson was released Friday night on his own recognizance.
“I’m guessing that charges will be filed, but I don’t know yet,” Fisher said. “But I don’t think that charges are going to be filed until at least Friday. We want to obtain a copy of the film.”
Wilson (6-foot-2, 175 pounds), a wide receiver-defensive back, also faces disciplinary action from school administrators, according to Principal Linda Janzen.
In the meantime, Southern Section officials are expected to make recommendations by Wednesday whether disciplinary action against either school is warranted, according to Saugus athletic director Randy Parker.
“The Golden League will not meet prior to the (Southern Section) office’s recommendations,” Parker said. The six-team league’s principals and athletic directors probably will meet Thursday, Parker said.
Saugus Coach Dick Flaherty, who maintains that his team was not involved in the incident, has argued that the Centurions should be awarded a victory by forfeit. But he will rely on school administrators to pursue the matter, he said.
The league opener for both schools was halted after Wilson grabbed Woolley and threw him to the ground after Palmdale was assessed 15 yards for a third consecutive personal foul. At least six L. A. County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene and Wilson was later arrested in the locker room.
Woolley, 31, said he suffered a bruised back and shoulders and minor scratches.
