Psychiatric Exams Ordered for Harry Helmsley: Billionaire Harry Helmsley, whose lawyers are seeking dismissal of state tax-evasion charges on grounds that he is mentally incompetent, was ordered Friday to undergo further psychiatric examination in the wake of reports that he helped the defense in his wife’s criminal trial. At a hearing in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, Justice John Bradley ordered Helmsley, 80, to be tested before returning to court in February. But Assistant Atty. Gen. Alfredo Mendez demanded a chance to question the doctors who have twice found Helmsley incompetent to stand trial. Harry and Leona Helmsley, 69, are accused of falsifying business records to disguise renovations to their Connecticut mansion as business expenses and cheating New York state out of million of dollars in taxes.
