Demonstrations, Races and Rides Slated for Fire Prevention Week
SANTA FE SPRINGS — This is Fire Prevention Week, scheduled to coincide with the commemoration of the infamous Chicago fire which on Oct. 9, 1871, blackened 2,100 acres of Chicago, left 100,000 homeless and more than 200 dead.
The local observance will feature a Fire Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Lake Center Athletic Park, 11641 Florence Ave. Admission is free.
The purpose of the fair is to educate residents in burn prevention and disaster preparedness. Activities will include a fire safety obstacle course, relay races, fire extinguisher demonstrations, fire engine rides, clowns, puppet shows by Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie, games and prizes.
Participating will be representatives of the American Red Cross, Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Center in Canoga Park, Norwalk Sheriff’s Station, American Heart Assn., Amateur Radio and the county and Arcadia fire departments with antique fire equipment. Fire personnel will be available to discuss any individual problems with participants.
