Ivan Lendl overcame a troubled first serve Saturday to defeat Miroslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the final of a tennis tournament at Stuttgart, West Germany.
Lendl, the world’s top-ranked player, broke Mecir twice to win the first set, then started missing his first serves. Mecir took advantage to break Lendl in the first game of the second set and held serve to win.
Unseeded Jim Courier upset Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, and advanced to the final of an indoor tournament at Basel, Switzerland.
In today’s final, Courier, 19, will face top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden, who beat Jimmy Connors, 6-1, 7-5.
It will be the first Grand Prix final for Courier, who earlier upset fourth-seeded Aaron Krickstein.
Edberg dominated the first set against Connors with aggressiveness. In the second set, Connors broke Edberg’s service and led, 3-1, before the Swede rallied.
