PEN PALS:
For the past few years, British film makers have been sniping at Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, blasting her conservative policies in such films as “Sammy and Rosie Get Laid,†“High Hopes†and “How to Get Ahead in Advertising.†More recently, British pop stars have joined the chorus of disapproval. First Elvis Costello vented his fury in “Tramp the Dirt Down.†Now the Kinks, who were writing social commentaries about Upper-Class Twit trend-setters 20 years ago, are taking aim at Thatcher too. The band’s upcoming album, “UK Jive,†offers a poison-pen letter titled “Dear Margaret.†Written by Dave Davies, it paints her as an evil temptress with a “wiggle in your walk†and “lying eyes†who suckers her lovers into “living the illusion to be a millionaire.†Here’s a sample verse:
Your economic growth and your cool suntan,
But what have you done to your fellow man,
You’ve betrayed us all with just a wave of your hand,
What good is prosperity when it starves the soul in man,
Dear Margaret I beg of you, don’t you like rock ‘n’ roll,
Dear Margaret, I’m gonna tell on you.
