Celebrating the 75th Year of the Tiger
San Fernando High will commemorate its 75th season of football at a ceremony preceding tonight’s 8 p.m. home game against Canoga Park.
San Fernando has invited six former coaches to attend the ceremony. In addition, former Tiger standouts from the Moore family--brothers Anthony, Kenny, Manfred and Malcolm Moore--will be introduced. Former coaches expected to participate are Dwight Chapman, Bill Hornbeck, Howard Marcus, Bill Marsh, Phil Lozano and Orlie Schmidt.
Ebbie Elam, who played on the 1926 team that was unbeaten, untied and unscored upon, will participate in a segment featuring a Tiger player or coach from each decade since the 1920s.
San Fernando, the oldest high school in the Valley, opened its doors in 1896 and fielded its first football team in 1914. No team was formed in 1918 because of an influenza epidemic, according to Bill Frazer, the school’s unofficial football historian and a 1960 graduate.
San Fernando chose the Canoga Park game for its ceremony because the Hunters are the school’s oldest rival. Tonight marks the teams’ 48th meeting. San Fernando leads the series, 26-14. There have been seven ties.
