P. M. BRIEFING : U.S. Probes Merger in USAir Crash
PITTSBURGH — Federal authorities are investigating whether USAir’s merger with Piedmont Airlines weakened the performance of USAir flight crews, it was reported today.
As part of the investigation, Federal Aviation Administration officials are looking at the crash of a USAir jet in New York City and other incidents that occurred after the merger Aug. 5 with Charlotte, N.C.-based Piedmont, the Pittsburgh Press said.
Nearly 3,000 pilots, mostly from Piedmont, were taught new preflight emergency and other procedures as part of USAir’s yearlong merger effort, the newspaper said.
