Top-seeded John McEnroe withdrew from the $425,000 Volvo of San Francisco tennis tournament with a knee injury.
The announcement was made by tournament director Barry MacKay, who said the seriousness of McEnroe’s injury was not immediately known but that McEnroe was following the orders of Dr. Omar Fareed of Los Angeles, the U.S. Davis Cup physician.
