Roundup : Edison Edges University in Tennis

It couldn’t have been any closer when the Edison High School girls’ tennis team defeated visiting University in a tie-breaker Wednesday.
The teams each won nine sets, but Edison won the nonleague match because of its 72-71 advantage in games.
The Chargers (5-1) were led by the doubles play of Nikki Turner and Laura Oleson, who won their sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and Teresa Warren and Katie Beard, who won, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. University is 5-2.
In other nonleague tennis:
Capistrano Valley 14, Estancia 4--The Cougars’ No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams swept to lead the home team. The No. 2 team of Jennifer Palumbo and Pam Berning won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, and the No. 3 team of Grace Wu and Jenny Canfield won, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, for Capistrano Valley (3-0).
Bina Birch swept her singles matches, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3, for Estancia (3-3).
Tustin 13, Savanna 5--Tustin won at home despite a three-set sweep by Savanna’s No. 1 singles’ player, Cindy Kuragami. She won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and is is 15-0 for Savanna (2-3).
Corona del Mar 16, Laguna Hills 2--Courtney Strauss swept her singles matches, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0, and the Sea Kings’ three doubles teams also swept to lead host Corona del Mar (5-0). The Sea Kings’ No. 1 doubles team, Kristen Pollock and Jackie O’Leary, won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, and has not lost in 15 sets this season.
Fountain Valley 14, Los Alamitos 4--Christi Mykles and Staci Gossard won their doubles sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, as the host Barons (2-2) won. Los Alamitos is 1-1.
Rosary 9, El Dorado 9--Rosary defeated host El Dorado by winning 71-64 in games. Rosary won all the singles sets and El Dorado swept in doubles. Mandy Gomez and Joyce Cruz, both Rosary freshmen, won their singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, respectively, to lead the Royals (4-0).
Western 16, Troy 2--Western’s Danielle Norman won, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, in singles and the doubles team of Cindy Brown and Sara Wadhwani won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, at Troy. Western is 5-0.
Valencia 10, Sonora 8--Valencia’s No. 1 doubles team of Pam Haskell and Lori Clocke won, 7-6, 6-0, 6-0, to lead the Tigers (3-2) at Sonora.
Villa Park 14, Magnolia 4--Ashley Thurston swept her singles matches, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and the doubles teams of Marie Birnbaum and Tobey Wu, and Cristie Stoneham and Tara Simon won, 6-2, 6-1 6-0, and 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, respectively, to lead host Villa Park (3-1).
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
El Modena 3, El Dorado 0--Veronica Lopez had seven service aces and Tanya Troutman had eight kills as host El Modena (5-0) won, 15-3, 19-17, 15-5.
Laguna Hills 3, Santa Ana 0--The host Hawks rolled, 15-11, 15-13, 15-5. Laguna Hills is 2-3.
Tustin 3, Canyon 1--Canyon’s Dawn Austin had 12 kills but visiting Tustin still won, 15-12, 6-15, 16-14, 15-10.
In nonleague water polo:
Saddleback 17, Orange 13--The score was tied, 12-12, but host Saddleback outscored Orange, 5-1, in the fourth quarter. Chris Burger scored three of his game-high eight goals in the fourth quarter.
Derek McCord had four goals for Saddleback (4-2). Burger has scored 24 goals and McCord 22 in six matches this season.
