Hezbollah and Amal Meet Iran Leaders

NICOSIA, Cyprus — Delegations from Lebanon’s Shiite Muslim groups Hezbollah and Amal, reconciled after years of rivalry, met with Iranian leaders in Tehran on Sunday, the Iranian news agency IRNA said.
It said President Hashemi Rafsanjani repeated Iran’s support for Hezbollah (Party of God) in a meeting with its delegation.
The Amal delegation met with Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, who reportedly expressed satisfaction at the raprochement between the two groups.
Amal, which has the backing of Syria, has frequently clashed with Hezbollah in Beirut and southern Lebanon as the two groups vied for dominance over the country’s Shiite community.
