Problems With Dialing 911
Kuehl writes that the answer for the Maria Navarros of society lies in change of deeply held societal beliefs, reassignment of law enforcement resources and improved training of law enforcement personnel. In the same letter, she describes the enormity of the problem of domestic violence against women. She correctly states that only the potential victim can accurately assess the severity of the threat against her.
The true essence of her position, one that actually supports the interests of the murderers, rapists and wife-beaters that she despise, is summed up in the following two sentences: “It is simply bad policy to refuse to respond until a crime is actually in progress. By that time, women are unable to defend themselves.†The statement that women are unable to defend themselves is dangerously irresponsible.
If you are a woman in Maria Navarro’s position, I suggest that you buy a small revolver, requiring that the store provide you with information on local shooting and safety instruction before you buy; attend your class, and ask how to padlock your gun to keep your kids safe.
Don’t buy the argument that you can’t protect yourself.
