Haiti Imposes Austerity Measures: The Haitian government, under pressure from the International Monetary Fund, has imposed new austerity measures that include new sales and income taxes and higher import duties, state-run television reported. The plan emerged from a round of negotiations with IMF officials who have pressed the government of the hemisphere’s poorest nation for reforms as a condition for new loans. The IMF and other lending organizations cut off aid to Haiti in 1987 after the government suspended an election in which gunmen killed more than 30 people at polling stations.
