Israeli warplanes bombed a guerrilla base in southern Lebanon in the wake of two days of Katyusha rocket attacks on northern Israeli border settlements, blamed by military commanders on the pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement. Elsewhere in Lebanon, Syrian and Christian forces fought with tanks and artillery in the mountains northeast of Beirut, shattering an 18-hour lull. Police said one person was killed and 11 wounded in the exchanges. Beirut, the capital, enjoyed a respite from shelling, giving its citizens a chance to rest after spending three days indoors.
