NFL Exhibition Roundup : Jets Work Overtime, Edge Chiefs on Safety, 15-13
In an overtime game that ended on a safety, the New York Jets scored a 15-13 exhibition victory over the Kansas City Chiefs Friday night at Kansas City.
With 11:44 left in overtime, Mike Elkins, rookie quarterback for the Chiefs, was sacked for an eight-yard loss. On the next play, he was sacked for a safety.
The Jets’ Marvin Washington got the first sack, and Dennis Byrd got the unusual game-decider as the Jets finished the exhibition season 2-2 and the Chiefs wound up 1-3.
Elkins, who completed five of eight passes for 72 yards, couldn’t get the Chiefs out of a hole after the Jets’ Pat Leahy missed a 38-yard field-goal attempt.
Jet wide receiver Al Toon, who signed a contract earlier in the week, left the game in the first half with a sprained shoulder and was considered questionable for the Jets’ opener against New England next weekend.
Seattle 28, San Francisco 17--Nesby Glasgow ran back a blocked field-goal attempt 71 yards for a third-quarter touchdown as the Seahawks (3-1) beat the 49ers (3-2) at Seattle.
Kelly Stouffer’s six-yard touchdown pass to Louis Clark with 1:33 left in the third quarter gave Seattle a 21-17 lead, and the Seahawks scored again on a 15-yard run by rookie Derrick Fenner with 1:25 left.
Referee Red Cashion called three penalties on the Seahawks under the NFL’s new noise rules because the Kingdome fans made too much noise when the 49ers had the ball.
The 49ers lost starting linebacker Riki Ellison with a broken right forearm in the first quarter. Ellison, a seven-year pro, is expected to be out six to eight weeks.
San Diego 21, Phoenix 20--Jim McMahon threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Quinn Early with time running out to give the Chargers (2-2) a victory over the Cardinals (1-3) in San Diego.
McMahon, who had left the game after three quarters, returned for the final play after rookie quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver was shaken up on a bootleg with one second remaining and the Chargers on the Phoenix four-yard line.
Washington 26, New Orleans 21--Reserve quarterback Stan Humphries passed to Carl Harry for a touchdown on a 39-yard play midway through the fourth quarter to give the Redskins a victory at New Orleans.
The Redskins ended 3-1, the Saints 1-3.
Derrick Shepard, a Plan B castoff by the Redskins, scored for the Saints on an 81-yard punt return in the second half. He muffed the catch at the Saint 40 and chased it back to the 19 before picking it up and going all the way.
Green Bay 16, New England 0--Rookie Chris Jacke kicked three field goals, and Phillip Epps scored on a 20-yard run on a reverse as the Packers (3-1) shut out the Patriots (2-2) at Foxboro, Mass.
The Patriots also lost two defensive starters with serious injuries. Defensive end Garin Veris tore ligaments in his left knee in the first quarter, and cornerback Ronnie Lippett suffered a ruptured left Achilles’ tendon in the third quarter.
Only 26,549 fans attended the game at 60,794-seat Sullivan Stadium.
Atlanta 36, Buffalo 17--Greg Paterra scored three touchdowns, including two in a 55-second span, to lead the Falcons (1-3) over the Bills (1-4) before 41,813 at Jacksonville, Fla.
Minnesota 17, Cincinnati 10--The Vikings held Ickey Woods to a minus-six yards in seven carries, and Alfred Anderson scored on a 21-yard run and a one-yard reception from Tommy Kramer as the Vikings (3-1) beat the Bengals (2-2) at Minneapolis.
Minnesota held Boomer Esiason to 79 yards passing in three quarters.
Viking kicker Chuck Nelson, whose job was already in jeopardy after he missed field goals of 20, 31, 31, 39 and 47 yards earlier in the exhibition season, was wide left on 34- and 33-yard attempts. Also, one of his extra-point kicks hit the left post but deflected through the uprights.
