John Howland Steinway, 72, retired chairman of Steinway & Sons piano makers. The great-grandson of Henry E. Steinway, who founded the company in New York in 1853, Steinway entered the world-renowned family business as an apprentice in 1939 after his graduation from Bard College. He was chairman from 1980 to 1983. In Plymouth, Mass., on Tuesday.
