ON THE SIDELINES : E. German Wins Europe Diving Title

BONN — Ute Wetzig of East Germany won the women’s 10-meter platform diving event today at the European Swimming Championships, picking up the first gold medal of the weeklong competition.
The 18-year-old Wetzig collected 403.35 points for her eight dives, followed by Inga Afonina of the Soviet Union with 400.83. Jana Eichler of East Germany took the bronze medal.
Wetzig took first place on the sixth dive from Eichler, who had a sloppy entry at the end of her forward 3 1/2 somersault.
