Fears that drug dealers are sponsoring some teams and paying college athletes to play have led organizers of a summer basketball league in Detroit to suspend its season.
The decision by the league’s organizers came after the recent shooting of a coach, who officials said had a lengthy criminal record for drug, robbery and weapons offenses.
Rev. Thomas Finnigan, a spokesman at St. Cecilia’s Church in northwest Detroit, said the church’s board of directors also suspended the basketball league until it can review policies and make changes “that will guarantee the continual growth of the program and our youth.”
