Dexter King, the youngest son of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has resigned as president of the center in Atlanta named for his father, center officials confirmed. The resignation had been rumored for several days because of apparent rifts among the leadership of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change over how it should be managed. In January, the center’s board of directors elected King, 28, to take over the presidency from his mother, Coretta Scott King, who remained as chief executive officer. Civil rights leaders in Atlanta said this week that there has been conflict within the center’s leadership over fiscal and personnel concerns, and there were reports of a dispute between King and his mother.
