Cannery Plan to Be Studied
The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has agreed to consider a proposal from the Wilmington Citizens Advisory Committee to set aside additional land for a waterfront development in that community.
The committee proposes that the Harbor Department preserve the Heinz Petfood Cannery, which would be converted into a restaurant and included in the waterfront development at the foot of Avalon Boulevard. Port officials want to tear down the cannery.
The commissioners asked their Harbor Development Committee--composed of Commissioners Robert Rados and Floyd Clay--to investigate the committee’s proposal. In addition, they instructed management to review it--a process that port officials say already has begun.
Said Commissioner Ronald Lushing: “There ought to be a way that the port can continue to expand and function, and the rights of the residents can be preserved.â€
