Jockey Jorge Velasquez, who had scored his 6,000th career victory earlier in the day, made it 6,001 by riding favored Lets Do Lunch to victory in the $31,000 Lord Date Purse at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Ill. Bill Shoemaker, who has said he will retire next February at 58, holds the career record with 8,820 winners. He is followed by Laffit Pincay with 7,229, Angel Cordero with 6,440 and Johnny Longden with 6,032.
