P.M. BRIEFING : Phone Card for Blind Introduced
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — US Sprint today introduced a Braille version of its calling card, the FONCARD, offering more accessible long-distance telephone service to people who are blind or partially sighted.
“To the best of our knowledge, the Braille FONCARD is the first credit card suited to the needs of the blind and partially sighted,†said Lawrence L. Lake, US Sprint senior vice president for product management.
All numbers necessary to complete a call are encoded on the card in Braille, a printing system in which characters are formed by patterns of raised dots felt with the fingers.
There is no extra charge for the Braille FONCARD, which also features special services including free directory assistance and free over-the-phone bill review, the company said.
