Shoemaker Wins Two in Wyoming Farewell
EVANSTON, Wyo. — Bill Shoemaker, horse racing’s all-time leading jockey, had two rides during a stop at Wyoming Downs Saturday, both favorites and both winners.
Shoemaker, who stopped here as part of his farewell tour, rode 1-5 favorite Sailor Erin and 1-9 choice The Irish Devil to victories in two feature races before a season-high crowd of 4,312.
Shoemaker took Sailor Erin to victory in the $2,200 Swaps. Sailor Erin scored his fourth straight win in the one-mile event, drawing off by four lengths over 14-1 outsider El Peak.
Shoemaker then brought The Irish Devil from off a blistering pace in the $2,200 Dr. Fager. The Irish Devil, winning for the third straight time, eased past 10-1 shot Turf’s Bounty in the final sixteenth of a mile to win by nearly a length.
