3 Players Share SoCal Amateur Lead
A veteran amateur and two collegians overcame the heat and the difficult tree-lined Glendora Country Club course Friday to tie for the lead at 141 in the 90th Southern California Amateur, the nation’s oldest continuously contested golf championship.
Mark Johnson, a Barstow beer distributor, shot rounds of 71-70 and shared the lead with Oklahoma State student Harry Rudolph of La Jolla, who shot a 69-72, and Arizona State’s Paul Stankowski of Oxnard, who had rounds of 73-68.
The leaders were one shot in front of another threesome that included first-round leader Randy Drake. Drake slipped from a five-under-par 67 in the morning to a three-over-par 75 on the afternoon round of the 36-hole test.
