Failed to Set Flaps in Texas Crash, Delta Says

ATLANTA — Delta Air Lines said Wednesday that flight crew error led to an Aug. 31, 1988, crash during takeoff that killed 13 people at Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport.
“The flight crew failed to set the aircraft’s flaps and slats in the proper takeoff configuration as required by established Delta practices and procedures,” the airline said in a statement.
Flaps on the wings’ trailing edge and slats on the leading edge are extended to increase lift during takeoffs and landings.
“Accordingly, Delta has accepted responsibility for the accident on that basis,” the Atlanta-based airline said.
