A 9-year-old Fresno girl died after her legs were severed as the lower part of her body was sucked into an irrigation pump in northern Merced County. The victim was wading in the Merced River at Hagaman Park when suction from the pump pulled her into a 12-inch opening, county firefighters reported. The girl, whose name was withheld, was dead on arrival at a Turlock hospital.
