Suspect Denies Role in Green River Killings

SEATTLE — A man identified by police as a “viable suspect” in the Green River serial murder case issued a statement from jail saying: “I am not the Green River killer. The Green River Task Force has not treated me or my family fairly. They have made me out to be a very bad person, and I am not. People should know the fact that I have never hurt anyone in my life.”
William Jay Stevens II “is a colorful character, but he’s no murderer,” his lawyer said after authorities labeled Stevens a suspect in the nation’s worst serial slaying case and seized his travel receipts, 1,800 videotapes and police paraphernalia.
Stevens, 38, jailed in Seattle on other offenses since January, has not been charged in any of the deaths and disappearances.
Stevens’ statement denying any connection to the case was issued by his lawyer, Craig Beles, late Saturday.
The Green River killer has been blamed by police for the deaths of 40 young women.
