Wilson to Seek Berth on U. S. Basketball Team

Cleveland High graduate Trevor Wilson has been invited to try out for the U. S. basketball team for the World University Games, which will be held Aug. 20-30 in Duisburg, West Germany.

Wilson, who will be a senior at UCLA in the fall, joins a group of several high-profile collegians at the tryout camp at Purdue University, beginning Aug. 8.

Other players invited include Stacey Augmon, Larry Johnson and David Butler of Nevada Las Vegas; Jud Buechler and Matt Muehlebach of Arizona; Adam Keefe of Stanford and Stephen Thompson of Syracuse.

Royal High’s Kelly Kocur, who finished second in the Southern Section 4-A Division 100-meter butterfly as a senior, has received a full scholarship to Washington State.

Kocur was a three-time Marmonte League champion in the 100 butterfly.

The team that will represent the United States in the Stockholm International Horse Show from July 26 to 30 will include Marie Meyers of Newbury Park. The event is a prelude to the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm next July.

Meyers and her horse, Dimitrius, will be part of the team’s dressage contingent, along with Robert Dover of Mendham, N. J., and Carol Lavell of Fairfax, Vt. Members of the 11-person U. S. team were announced Thursday.

Kerry Mayor has been elected president of the the Cal State Northridge Athletic Assn.

Mayor will be joined on the fund-raising group’s executive board by Diana Cooley, executive vice president; Sean Toerner, vice president; Steve Weiss, secretary-treasurer; and Lee Alpert, the association’s past president.

Cal State Northridge has announced its tentative football schedule for the 1990 season. The Matadors will open on the road Sept. 1 at Northern Arizona. CSUN’s home opener will be Sept. 15 against Cal State Hayward.

Northridge’s other games will be at Central State, Okla., (Sept. 22); at home against UC Davis (Sept. 29); home against Portland State (Oct. 6); at Southern Utah (Oct. 13); home versus Cal State Sacramento (Oct. 20); at Santa Clara (Oct. 27); home against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (Nov. 3); and at Cal Lutheran (Nov. 10).
