About 18,000 gallons of raw sewage gushed into Chollas Creek in East San Diego on Thursday morning, the county Department of Health Services reported.

The spill occurred at 8:45 a.m. when a blocked sewer pipe caused a manhole near the intersection of 54th Street and Chollas Parkway to overflow into the nearby creek, a spokeswoman said. The sewage trickled as far as Euclid Avenue before it was contained by utility crews at noon.

About 50 signs have been posted to warn youngsters and others to stay out of the pools of sewage.
