Fifty high school students were named state winners Wednesday in a national journalism contest, giving them a chance to compete for a full four-year college scholarship this fall.

The California winner is Dawn Stone of El Toro High School. Stone is her school’s contributing writer for Orange County Life’s High Life section.

The state winners, who will all be seniors this fall, will come to Washington on Oct. 31 for a daylong news reporting contest that will decide the national winner.

More than 50,000 students from 1,000 high schools competed in the first round of the contest, sponsored by the Pilot Pen Corp. of Trumbull, Conn. A winning entry was selected in each school.

Then a winner was selected for each state from all the winning school entries.
