200 Return Home After Acid Spill Is Cleared

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. — About 200 people who fled their homes because of a vapor cloud formed by a spill of nitric acid were allowed to return home early Sunday, authorities said.
The leak at a Briggs & Stratton plant, which manufactures lawn mower engines and other machinery, was stopped and the spill was neutralized with agricultural lime, a police spokeswoman said. She said a security guard who checked on the Saturday leak was overcome by the vapor and held overnight for observation at a hospital.
