Baron, Patridge Gain Tennis Wins

The top two seeded men’s players, Yoiam Baron and Scott Patridge, breezed to the semifinal round of the men’s open singles division of the 73rd La Jolla Tennis Championships Sunday at the La Jolla Tennis Club.

Baron, the No. 1 seeded player who plays at USIU, downed Theodore Nusenow of Laguna Beach, 6-1, 6-2. Patridge, who is the tournament’s second-seeded player, beat John Mattice of San Diego, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 4 seeded player, Jack Kruger of La Jolla, advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Peter Choi of San Diego. James Ferrari, an unseeded player from San Diego, downed unseeded Jim Settles of Mesa, Ariz., 6-2, 7-5.

In quarterfinal action in the women’s open singles division, Lisa Seeman, the No. 1 seeded player from Solvang, defeated No. 7 Julie Willett of Irvine, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. No. 5 Carolyn Reed of Escondido was upset by unseeded Shelley Sunsman of San Diego, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

No. 6 Shelley Zeeman of Kapalua, Hawaii, reached the semifinals with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory over No. 4 Christy Drage of San Diego. Luann Klimchock, an unseeded player who plays for Arizona State University, came back to top Lindsey Matthews of Irvine, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

BIATHON

Joel Thompson of Encinitas returned to his former hometown of Albuquerque, N.M., to win the Coors Light Biathlon, completing a 30-kilometer bicycle race and two five-kilometer foot races in 1 hour 12 minutes 33 seconds.
