Western Soccer League : L.A. Heat to Meet Rival

A full day of soccer activities will be capped off today when the Los Angeles Heat meet the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks at West Torrance High School’s Warrior Stadium in a matchup of the two highest scoring teams in the Western Soccer League.

The Heat (8-4), the WSL’s highest-scoring team with 31 goals, are led by forward Jeff Hooker. Hooker scored the quickest goal in WSL history last weekend when he scored in the 28th second against Real Santa Barbara.

Hooker’s seven goals and five assists give him 19 points, one shy of Brent Goulet’s 1986 WSL season record.

The Blackhawks (7-3), the WSL Northern Division leaders, are seven goals behind the Heat in the WSL scoring derby. San Francisco Bay is led by forward Steve Corpening (seven goals, one assist), former Chinese national team member Townsend Qin, and World Cup players John Doyle and George Pastor.

The Blackhawks defeated the Heat, 3-1, in the league opener April 22.

Kickoff time today is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be followed by fireworks.

The Heat will also celebrate the Hawthorne-based American Youth Soccer Organization’s 25th anniversary by giving a series of soccer clinics for AYSO youths beginning at 3:30 p.m. World Cup players will be on hand for autographs after the clinics and before the game.
