A raging four-alarm fire engulfed a Pacific Beach office complex early Thursday and pressed 100 firefighters into action, San Diego Fire Department officials reported. There were no major injuries.
The three-story building, 2180 Garnet Ave., went up in flames shortly before 3:30 a.m. and burned for more than two hours in what a Fire Department spokesman termed a “spectacular†blaze. The fire was finally brought under control about 5:30 a.m., officials said. Two firefighters were hospitalized for knee and back injuries and released, according a department spokeswoman said.
The agency’s Metro Arson Strike Team estimated the damage at $2 million. The fire ravaged the top two floors, forcing demolition of nearly half of the structure for safety reasons, strike team detective John Buono said. That has prevented detectives from entering the building to investigate the fire, Buono said.
The area around the fire remained cordoned off Thursday, causing traffic tie-ups.
