Girls’ Soccer Star From La Puente Selects USIU

Kim White, an All-CIF Southern Section girls’ soccer player from Bishop Amat High School in La Puente, has signed a national letter of intent with U.S. International University. The defender led Bishop Amat to four consecutive section tournaments and played for the state champion under-19 team.

White is the second state select player to sign with USIU, joining Lisa Ferragamo of Agoura. Larry Draluck will be in his first season as USIU coach this coming fall.

YACHTING

High winds and rough seas have forced two of the 11 yachts competing in the second San Diego to Honolulu Double Handed Traspac race to bow out.

Breathless, raced by Scott and Shannon Davy of Carlsbad, and Kairos, out of Northridge, both lost their masts early Monday morning and are returning to San Diego. Winds reached more than 30 knots, with seas of eight to 10 feet.

Major Tom, sailed by Eric Bohman and Kevin Miller of Ventura, held a slight lead over Stinger, sailed by Terry Lingenfelder and Mike Casinelli of the San Diego Yacht Club. The first yachts are expected to finish on or about July 1.

TRACK AND FIELD

Brent Noon of Fallbrook High School will compete against Randy Barnes, the world indoor record holder and silver medalist at the 1988 Olympics, and Jim Doehring of Fallbrook, the runner-up to Barnes at the recent U.S. track championships, in the Jack in the Box Invitational at UCLA’s Drake Stadium Aug. 6.

Noon is the 1989 national high school leader with a put of 69-8 1/2 but will have to use the 16-pound shot instead of the 12-pounder that is used in high school meets.
