Calvin Griffith, former owner of the Minnesota Twins, was named today as the 1989 winner of The Sporting News Pioneer Award.
Griffith was elected by participating baseball executives, two-thirds of whom returned ballots. The runner-up was Gabe Paul. The Sporting News established the Pioneer Award in 1984 to honor retired baseball executives who have made major contributions to the sport.
