IN BRIEF : Scott Bryant College Player of Year
OMAHA, Neb. — Versatile Texas junior Scott Bryant was named today as College Player of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Assn.
Bryant, who hit 18 homers and led the nation with 108 runs batted in and 31 doubles, was outfielder, designated hitter, first baseman and pitcher for the Longhorns, who will make their 25th appearance in the College World Series on Saturday night. Bryant hit .388 and struck out only 21 times in 242 at bats. He also had a 1-0 record as a pitcher in three games for Texas.
Joining Bryant on the All-American first team are Louisiana State pitcher Ben McDonald, Texas pitcher Kirk Dressendorfer and Clemson pitcher Brian Barnes. The first team includes catcher Eric Wedge of Wichita State, Frank Thomas of Auburn at first base, Mitch Hannahs of Indiana State at second, Ed Zosky of Fresno State at shortstop, John Byington of Texas A&M; at third, Bryant as designated hitter and Pete Young of Mississippi State as utility player. In the outfield are Dan Peltier of Notre Dame, Troy Eklund of Arkansas and Tom Goodwin of Fresno State.
