The candidates were lined up in New York to replace Rick Pitino as coach of the New York Knicks, but General Manager Al Bianchi has his sights set on an old friend, John MacLeod of the Dallas Mavericks.

Bianchi contacted the Mavericks for permission to speak with MacLeod about the Knicks’ job, which Pitino left to become coach at the University of Kentucky.

Rick Sund, Dallas’ vice president of basketball operations, told Bianchi that he wanted to confer with the rest of the team’s management before giving permission.

Bianchi was an assistant with the Phoenix Suns, where MacLeod was coach for 14 years before departing after the 1986-87 season.
