Saros Brig Gets Another Wire-to-Wire Win
Saros Brig notched her second straight wire-to-wire victory, beating favored Pen Bal Lady by two lengths in the $45,000 allowance feature for older fillies and mares Friday on the turf at Hollywood Park.
Trained by Dominick Manzi and ridden at high weight of 118 pounds by Laffit Pincay, the 5-year-old daughter of Saros covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40 4/5 for her third victory in eight starts this year.
Saros Brig opened a one-length advantage over Hollywood Glitter going into the turn and widened her margin by as many as three lengths on the backstretch. Four horses, including Pen Bal Lady, chased her through the stretch in a single line. But Pen Bal Lady had used up considerable ground rounding the far turn and couldn’t catch up.
Saros Brig, established as the 5-2 second choice by the crowd of 12,570, returned $7.20, $2.80 and $2.40. Pen Bal Lady, an English-bred who carried Chris McCarron and 115 pounds, paid $2.40 and $2.20. Tropical Stephanie, with Russell Baze and 115 pounds, finished one-half length back in third and paid $3.80.
Saros Brig won $24,750 for Green Thumb Farm Stable, increasing her earnings to $434,093.
