STRASBOURG, France — The European Parliament urged China’s leaders Thursday to open a dialogue with students demonstrating for political reform, saying otherwise events could take a turn for the worse.
In a message of support to the students, protesting in defiance of martial law, a parliamentary resolution said:
“The European Parliament salutes the Chinese students and people, who with courage and determination are demonstrating their attachment to the values of freedom and democracy.”
It added that the Parliament, representing the 12 member nations of the European Community, “hopes the Chinese government will respond by showing openness and a willingness to talk, which alone will prevent developments prejudicial to the present situation.”
