COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State Athletic Director Jim Jones has given Maryland officials permission to talk to basketball Coach Gary Williams about the head coaching job at his alma mater. Maryland Athletic Director Lew Perkins contacted Jones late Tuesday afternoon.
“We think Gary has done a fine job and we don’t look forward to seeing him leave,” Jones said. “We don’t want him to leave.”
Williams, who has two years left on a five-year contract at Ohio State, indicated earlier Tuesday that he was interested in the Maryland job, which became available when Bob Wade resigned May 12.
