Surf Contest Reinstates Women’s Competition
The Op Pro surfing contest has reinstated its women’s competition, according to Dori Payne of the Assn. of Surfing Professionals.
Last month, Op Pro officials announced they would no longer hold a women’s event as part of the Aug. 1-6 contest at Huntington Beach. Officials were concerned that the cancellation of the Stubbies pro surfing event in Oceanside would affect the Op Pro’s ability to draw big-name surfers.
By canceling the women’s competition, they upped the purse from $65,000 to $80,000 to ensure that the top surfers would attend.
Payne was informed Monday by Bonnie Crail of Ocean Pacific Sunwear, the event’s sponsor, that the women’s competition and its $15,000 purse would be reinstated. The men’s purse will be $65,000.
