For the first time since Fidel Castro took over Cuba in 1959 and sparked an anti-communist exodus to Miami, a Cuban national sports team will compete in South Florida.
Organizers of the Junior World Weightlifting Championships, which begin Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, are hopeful that they can prevent tensions between Cuban athletes and anti-Castro demonstrators from escalating into the fistfights that marred the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis.
